Designers in Residence is a free, annual group exhibition that presents the work of emerging designers. Each designer is commissioned to produce a new piece of work for one of the public spaces of the museum. The 2008 show was based on the concept of collecting and collections, and it was these themes that informed our design and production of the identity, signage and gallery guide.
For the identity and signage, a system of modular nameplates was devised and produced by combining an assorted set of processes and techniques to an equal variety of boards. This gave each nameplate a sense of individuality and distinct character, whilst maintaining a shared visual language through the format and typography.
The gallery guide was also printed on a combination of stocks, each leaf of paper differing slightly from the other. Captions for each exhibit were in the form of sticky notes, which visitors could collect and tip in to the pages of the guide to create a record of each piece viewed.
