SPAM MAILER

A Wood McGrath introductory project, inspired by Spam emails. We wanted to explore the concept of delivering hidden content, and how this idea could translate into print, then back to screen.

We composed and printed a poem by sampling text from spam emails. The poem was overprinted with a reactive invisible ink. The invisible layer contains a selection of Wood McGrath project images, giving the poster a dual function as both standalone typographic piece, and project sampler.

The invisible layer reveals under ultraviolet light. We photographed the piece in both daylight and ultraviolet light and animated the reveal for web and email display.

We have a small number of posters available (free of charge). If you would like to receive one, please send an email to: mail@woodmcgrath.com
IYDEY AWARD

We were commissioned to design the award for The British Council Art, Architecture & Design department's International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year 2007.

Each year the award consists of a unique A1 framed poster, which features the same quote by writer George Bernard Shaw.

Our interpretation of the quote led us to divide the letter forms in half using a combination of printing, hand cutting and folding in order to reflect the duality of the statement.

The award was presented by Thorsten Van Elten during a ceremony held at 100% Design in September, to the winner Sigal Cohen of Venezuela.

PROFILE

Wood McGrath is a Graphic Design & Art Direction studio founded by Suzy Wood & Martin McGrath in 2007.

The practice is concept led, and the work produced is often tactile, playful, and highly crafted, combining innovative production methods with traditional processes and materials.

Wood McGrath aim to combine effective communication with an element of surprise, exploring the unexpected through visual, material, and conceptual means.

Our client base represents publishing, art, cultural and community based initiatives, performing arts and fashion, and commissions are informed by our ongoing development of self initiated and experimental projects.

Suzy Wood Studied Graphic Design at Brighton University.

Prior to Wood McGrath, Suzy worked at UK fashion magazine Dazed & Confused as designer, becoming Art Director in 2001. A comprehensive redesign of the magazine was undertaken, establishing a new design approach that actively supported emerging illustrators and designers.

The magazine was subsequently nominated for two Magazine Design Awards: ‘Best use of Illustration’ and ‘Best Designed Feature’, winning the latter.

Suzy regularly worked collaboratively with contributors and brands such Comme Des Garcons, directing and commissioning images for two limited edition t-shirt collections.

Other past projects include Hey Ladies, a non commercial, submissions based publication created to provide a platform for collaboration by female practitioners from varied disciplines.

An archive portfolio is available to view at www.suzywood.co.uk

Suzy is an Associate Lecturer in Graphic Design at Chelsea College of Art & Design.

Martin McGrath studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central Saint Martins.

After college he collaborated regularly with designer and artist Susanna Edwards, working on projects for Coco de Mer, The London Development Agency, University of the Arts London and Grafik Magazine.

In 2003 Martin co-founded Poetry Fanzine, a self published submission based magazine showcasing the work of poets and image-makers, as part of poetry fanzine he curated events at The Whitechapel Gallery.

In 2006 he collaborated with Susanna Edwards and Katharina Koall on a film version of Iain Sinclair’s book 'London: City of Disappearances'. The film was shown at Late at Tate Britain, Museum of London and 'Great British Design'- a conference at Saint Brides.

Martin has been an Associate Lecturer in Graphic Design and Illustration at Central Saint Martins since 2004.

BAGHDAD CIRCUS

A typographic illustration commissioned by Upstreet Magazine, to act as a teaser page for an extract from the book Baghdad Circus by Peter Beaumont.

The image was intended to be abstract and ambiguous - arousing curiosity without referring directly to the subject matter of the text.

A custom modular font was constructed for the purpose, using identical wooden triangles joined together to create letterforms. The process of constructing the sentence was then photographed at different stages, and composited together to create the final image.
MOSELEY FOLK FESTIVAL 2007

Identity, posters, site guide & on site branding for a two day festival in Birmingham.

The Identity was constructed using various elements including illustrated panels, inspired by the park in which the festival is held.
THE MEMORY CLOTH

Featuring content by visual arts practitioners, the publication was supplemented by contributions from exhibition visitors via a workshop set up in the gallery.

Contributors include Angharad Lewis, Rick Myers, Alexandre Bettler & John Morgan Studio.
SOUVENIRS FOR
THE 21ST CENTURY

Wood McGrath co-led a workshop in conjunction with the British Council in Caracas, continuing the Design and Architecture department's programme of workshops in new and emerging design economies worldwide.

The workshop investigated themes of cultural heritage and identity, relative to contemporary design and travel souvenirs. A group of young venezuelan designers worked throughout the week to conceive neo-souvenirs fit for the 21st century, the results of which are in development and will be exhibited in the near future.

Details of the exhibition will be posted here when available. Fellow workshop leaders from the UK were Sorrel Herschberg, Senior Curator at the British Council, and Simon Armstrong, Head of Retail at the Design Museum, London.

BLOOD ON PAPER
ARTISTS' BOOK LOTTO

We were commissioned to customise a book, to be given away in an artists' book lotto as part of the V&A Friday Late event 'Blood On Paper'.

Books were selected at random and sent to practitioners to customise and return.

We received a copy of the detective story 'Maigret and the Idle Burglar' by Georges Simenon.

This was our response.

NEWSLETTER, SPRING 08

A5 booklet

Published twice a year by the British Council, the design and architecture department newsletter is an update on past, current and up and coming projects.

We wanted the newsletter to feel simple yet thoroughly upbeat; a celebration of the department's achievements.

There are six different coloured covers, and a vivid fifth colour ink appears throughout.

The department's statements of intent are given prominence on the back cover.
WOOD MCGRATH
COLLABORATOR'S BUSINESS CARD

Before committing to a full time practice together, both partners continued to work on solo projects alongside the Wood McGrath collaborations.

This business card could be handed out as a link to Wood McGrath collaborations, but could also be torn in two down the perforation making a business card for each partner and their solo projects.
